Thanks, Dale! I probably will juice this up and publish it as a light-hearted memoir next year some time. I still have about 20 more parts to write for Substack, though.
I lived in Florida for about 40 years and traveled the entire state many times.
Really enjoyed this, Jim. We've have similar experiences. Rockets meant to go up and away, yet come down amidst people, and kites. We could fly them all night - flying in one direction then change to the opposite by morning. We would have kite wars - glass wax the string to cut another kite's string to see it fall away. Thanks for the memories!!
I’m from Jamaica, but since turning 15, I’ve lived in South Florida for most of my life (I am now 62). I appreciate hearing stories from Florida, as I don’t often hear any. And I love the stories of your boyhood. I think they would make a great memoir.
Those rockets were cool, weren't they? I remember dozens of us chasing after one that was floating down via parachute. And half of us falling on our faces because we weren't watching where we were going.
Thank you!!!

Any more Adventures of a Florida Boy coming out soon?
Great stuff, Jim. Yeah, we would attach model aircraft to fireworks and most of them went horizontally instead of vertically! 😁
Also, really loved the wistfulness of the last line 👍🏼

Tskes me back:SPURS, ROcKETS. AND TREES. Did you guys ever have an orange fight?
Yes, we did! We also grew watermelons in the sand fields and constantly had to do battle with marauding outsiders trying to steal them!
That's great of you to ask! 😀 I have a new segment coming Wednesday! My heroic exploits in Little League baseball.
